Kamakhya Temple not Maintained Properly: Supreme Court

The cleanliness and hygiene of the temple premises have been questioned by many visitors.

GUWAHATI: One of the most important religious destinations of the state came under criticism from the apex judicial authority regarding its state of cleanliness. The Supreme Court of India mentioned that the Kamakhya Temple of Assam was not receiving adequate maintenance and that there should be no compromise on hygiene when it comes to a public place of such importance.

The bench of the Supreme Court of India comprising of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice C T Ravikumar made this note. The matter in discussion was related to the maintenance of this major religious attraction. The case was regarding multiple letters given by several visitors to the temple that the authorities are not maintaining proper hygiene standards.

"I was there during the vacations, and the temple is not being properly maintained. This is my personal opinion. There can't be any compromise on hygiene," Justice Ajay Rastogi mentioned.

Senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan represented the temple in the hearing. He told the court that the temple has been taken care of the problems. Expert bodies like the Indian Institute of Technology have been involved to reach a proper solution to the hygiene and cleanliness problem. The apex court deferred the matter for hearing in January 2023 to enable a possible amicable solution between the parties.

Previously in December 2021, the apex court had disposed off a contempt plea by the elected Dolois (priests) representing the members of Bordeuri Samaj of Kamakhya Devalaya alleging misappropriation of funds by the Kamakhya Debutter Board.

Located in Guwahati, the Kamakhya Temple of Assam is one of the Shakti Peeths of the Mother Goddess. It is one of the key places of worship for the followers of the Shaktism sect of Hinduism. The President of India, Droupadi Murmu also visited this temple during her recent visit to Northeast India. The Ambubachi Mela is the main event celebrated in this temple. Other events include Navratri and Manasha Puja.
